Essen model: cancellation of the letter of intent

The independent hospital operators in the city of Essen, Kliniken Essen-Mitte, Contilia and Krupp, have invested considerable resources and time since December last year on the basis of a letter of intent (LoI) in order to develop a joint medical concept for the city. Despite intensive efforts, key issues proved to be too complex to arrive at a standardised solution at this stage. Krupp has therefore informed Contilia and Kliniken Essen-Mitte that it no longer wishes to adhere to the LoI and has proposed that the LoI be cancelled. Against this background, the parties have decided to terminate the existing LoI. They are taking this step in order to give each participating organisation the opportunity to realign itself and explore alternative paths. The parties are aware that in the context of the forthcoming hospital reform in NRW and at federal level, healthcare provision in Essen cannot be secured and further developed without sustainable changes. It is still necessary to develop sustainable structures for this.
