Fotozentrum Essen invites you to the symposium “Best Practices? Photographic legacies and estates”
The Essen Photo Center is an association of four Essen institutions: the Folkwang University of the Arts, the Folkwang Museum, the Ruhr Museum and the Krupp Historical Archive. The latter, which is owned by the Krupp Foundation, is a central component of the Photo Center and contributes to the preservation and research of historical photographic collections. The Photo Center has set itself the goal of promoting photography as a valuable cultural asset and supporting projects in the fields of art, science, restoration and archiving through inter-institutional cooperation.
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Fotozentrum Essen invites you to the second symposium entitled “Best Practices? Photographic Heritage and Legacies” at the Museum Folkwang in Essen. The symposium is aimed at experts and the interested public and is dedicated to the question of how photographic legacies and estates can be preserved and made accessible. Given the ephemeral nature of photographs, it is particularly relevant to develop effective strategies to protect and preserve these collections.

- Jörg Sasse (Berlin)
- Stefanie Grebe (Ruhr Museum)
- Marco Klindt (ZIB Berlin)
- Christine Frisinghelli (Camera Austria Graz)
- Thomas Weski (Berlin) + Steffen Siegel (Folkwang Universität der Künste)
- Matthias Gründig (Museum Folkwang)
Former scholarship holders of the Krupp Foundation’s “Museum Curators for Photography” program, such as Matthias Pfaller (Centre Pompidou Paris) and Kathrin Schönegg (Münchner Stadtmuseum), will also share their expertise.
