Alfried Krupp Institute for Advanced Study in Greifswald

The Alfried Krupp Institute for Advanced Study in Greifswald (Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald) is an academically independent institution under the auspices of the Alfried Krupp Kolleg Greifswald Foundation. The Institute is intended to serve outstanding research and to realise projects of interdisciplinary and international cooperation.

History of origin

On 20 June 2000, the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the University of Greifswald established the Alfried Krupp Kolleg Greifswald Foundation. As a foundation under civil law, it makes a contribution to the promotion of science and research at the University of Greifswald in accordance with its statutes, in particular through the operation of the Alfried Krupp Institute for Advanced Study in Greifswald. The Foundation is independent and facilitates high-quality scientific work. The Krupp Foundation has made a significant financial contribution to the project and continues to fund the Institute’s programme to this day.

Focal Points

The activities in the academic programme of the Alfried Krupp Institute for Advanced Study in Greifswald are essentially based on four programme pillars: the Alfried Krupp Fellows Programme, the conference programme, the lecture programme and the Young Academy Greifswald, which was founded in 2012. The young people that are being sponsored as part of the Alfried Krupp Fellows Programme contribute lectures or hold conferences and workshops at the Institute and are available to the Young Academy as mentors. The conference programme consists of conferences, colloquia, workshops and summer schools with a wide range of subject areas and a high proportion of international events, while the lecture programme is also aimed at interested citizens of Greifswald. Established in 2012, the “Junge Kolleg Greifswald” (Young Academy Greifswald) is a forum for the promotion of Greifswald scholarship holders of the “Begabtenförderungswerke” (Organizations for the promotion of young talent) and the “Deutschlandstipendium” scholarship holders. Within this framework, talented students are given the opportunity to independently design and implement a scientific programme.

The Krupp Foundation’s commitment

The city of Greifswald and the University of Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern constitute a focal point of the Krupp Foundation’s funding activities in the new German states. The Foundation was already involved here before the Wall came down. In June 2000, the Krupp Foundation, together with the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the University of Greifswald, established the Alfried Krupp Kolleg Greifswald Foundation. The Krupp Foundation contributed a considerable amount of the Foundation’s capital to the project in the form of land as well as buildings and their furnishings: Specifically, this involved the buildings of the institute (Kolleg) as well as the furnishings with a value of around EUR 16.4 million. The financial capital is provided in equal parts by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the University of Greifswald: Both made a cash asset contribution of EUR 2 million each. In addition, there are annual contributions from all donors and permanently secured personnel funds from the university.

Key projects

Scientific programme

In 2020, the Krupp Foundation made EUR 1.4 million available for the scientific programme of the Alfried Krupp Kolleg Greifswald Foundation. This commitment is intended to provide the institute (Kolleg) with planning security until at least autumn 2026 so that it can continue to realise a high-quality scientific programme with international appeal.
