Alfried Krupp Hospital

Alfried Krupp Hospital

With its own competence and health centres, the Alfried Krupp Hospital contributes to comprehensive medical and nursing care in the region at two locations in Essen. It is owned by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation. As a foundation hospital with a long history, the Alfried Krupp Hospital is committed to the preserving, conservative tradition of medicine that is not limited to the individual case of illness, but rather takes a holistic view of the individual.

History

The beginnings of the hospital date back to a military hospital. It was built by Alfred Krupp more than 150 years ago near the Krupp company premises for wounded soldiers of the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871. After the end of the war, the facility was initially continued as a hospital for factory employees. This developed into the Krupp hospitals, which have also been open to the public in Essen since 1920. The Foundation’s decision in 1971 to take over the hospital from the Krupp company was significant for today’s Alfried Krupp Hospital. In doing so, Berthold Beitz wished to continue the tradition of Krupp’s nursing care with modern means and to provide the Foundation with a long-term, highly visible area of activity of its own. With the last new building in 1980 and the takeover of Lutherhaus Steele in 2007, as well as the construction of a medical centre, the hospital complex continued to develop steadily.

Focal Points

The Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen-Rüttenscheid is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen and has 575 beds. The hospital’s 11 clinics offer their patients treatment at the highest medical level. At the Essen-Steele location, the Alfried Krupp Hospital has 320 beds and six clinics. The former Lutherhaus is a teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen. A wide range of specialist disciplines and cutting-edge international medicine in select specialisations make the Alfried Krupp Hospital one of the most modern and capable hospitals in Germany. A total of around 2,500 employees provide a wide range of medical and nursing care: Patients receive optimal care in a pleasant environment that supports a rapid healing process. The broad specialist orientation, together with our own competence and health centres, enables specialists and nursing staff to offer interdisciplinary treatment concepts, especially for patients with complex clinical presentations.

The Foundation’s commitment

The Krupp Foundation is the owner of the Alfried Krupp Hospital. Promoting advancements in medicine is an important goal of the Foundation. Since it was founded in 1968, more than EUR 190 million have been invested in the statutory area of healthcare, including EUR 150 million in projects at the Alfried Krupp Hospital alone. In times of a global pandemic, demographic change and a hospital landscape under pressure, it is becoming increasingly important to put investment income in the service of healthcare. Therefore, the Krupp Foundation supports the hospital with special investments and thereby allows for continuous further development independent of profitability considerations. Patients benefit from the staff’s qualifications in a facility with state-of-the-art medical and technical equipment. At the same time, the Foundation attaches great importance to the hospital being self-supporting and acting on its own economic responsibility.

Selection of projects

Refurbishment and remodelling of the ward

The Foundation has provided up to EUR 1.8 million in funding for the refurbishment and conversion of a ward for patients with statutory health insurance at the Essen-Steele site. The ward block in Steele comprises a total of eleven wards on five floors. The aim was a fundamental structural refurbishment that meets today’s standards of care for patients and modern working conditions for employees.

Instagram channel

The year 2020 marked the 150th anniversary of the hospital’s origins. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Alfried Krupp Hospital received funding totalling EUR 80,000 to set up an Instagram channel. The channel was launched as planned in early January 2020 and provides an overview of the people, the challenges of everyday life as well as the historical roots of the hospital.

Modernisation of the central emergency department

With an average of more than 2,400 patients per month, the central emergency department at the Alfried Krupp Hospital Rüttenscheid is a highly frequented area of the hospital. Around a third of all cases are admitted as emergencies for inpatient treatment. In order to improve the crowded conditions for both patients and staff, the entire emergency department is being expanded and extensively modernised. The project is largely financed by the Alfried Krupp Hospital’s own funds. In addition, the Foundation is providing funding in the amount of EUR 300,000.
