The Krupp Historical Archive’s “Essay and Archive” series enters its fourth round
The Krupp Historical Archive is now continuing the successfully initiated publication series ‘Essay and Archive’ in its fourth generation with a further volume. In the new publication “Im Glanz der Namen“, sociologist Prof. Dr Tilman Allert sheds light on a highly political event: the visit of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie 70 years ago to the Federal Republic of Germany, which was founded in 1949. The Emperor was the first ever state guest of the young Federal Republic. He and his delegation also visited Villa Hügel and the Krupp company, which was of great practical and symbolic significance for both the Federal Republic and Krupp.
Prof Dr Tilman Allert taught sociology and social psychology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. In addition to essays in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, among others, his most important publications include: ‘Der deutsche Gruß. Geschichte einer unheilvollen Geste’ (2005), ’Die Familie. Case studies on the resilience of a way of life’ (1998), ’Latte Macchiato. Sociology of small things’ (2015), ’Swans in the reeds. On a painting by Caspar David Friedrich’ (2024) and “Elementary Forms of Social Life” (2024).
About “Essay and Archive”
The series, published by Aschendorff-Verlag, reflects the history sedimented in ten kilometres of documents, photographs and objects in the Krupp Historical Archive. Further volumes are also planned for the coming years, for which authors with specialised expert knowledge will be recruited and who will create unexpected and previously unknown references to the Krupp cosmos.
The fascinating wealth of sources in the Krupp Archive makes it possible to unfold a panorama of the most diverse topics in the volumes: from cultural and economic history to architectural, political and everyday history. The aim is to offer a specialised audience as well as those interested in history a reading programme underpinned by rich archive sources.
